Building a Way of Life

A written program · Self-paced

How do you want to live?

Everyone has a way of life. But it is often undefined, fragmented, or inherited from others. This framework helps you build one you consciously choose.

Write to us and we will tell you when it opens.

How it works

Areas, the Manual and the Planner. Together, they connect how you want to live with the actions you take. Below, one Area, Relations, filled in.

  1. 01 · Areas

Give every part of your life a place.

Health, family, work, and everything else draw on the same time and energy. Five Areas give each part its own place, based on five relationships that represent the main ways you engage with life.

    The five Areas

    Your relationship with…

    SpiritualitySpirit
The meaning of existence and spiritual life.
    SelfYourself
    Identity and personal development.
    EnvironsEarth
The natural world and your physical surroundings.
    RelationsPeople
    Connections and bonds with others.
    FinancesThe economy
The creation, exchange, and management of resources.
  2. 02 · The Manual

Define your way of life, one Area at a time.

What you are aiming for, how you want to live, and who or what you learn from. You write a Manual like this for each Area.

    Relations · Manual

How I want to live here

    01 Aim

To have close, lasting relationships throughout life.

    02 Approach

    Values

Presence: give full attention to the person in front of me.

Honesty: say what is true, even when it is uncomfortable.

    Theories

Contact: closeness grows from time spent together and fades without it.

Conflict: relationships are damaged less by conflict than by conflict left unresolved.

    Practices

Set aside regular time with the people closest to me.

Put the phone away when I am with someone.

    03 Influences

People whose relationships I admire — what lasting connection looks like up close.

Writers on communication and conflict — practical guidance on repair.

  3. 03 · The Planner

Turn this year’s priorities into action.

Set Goals, define the Tasks to reach them, and schedule those Tasks in Time Blocks. You write a Planner for the Areas you choose this year.

    Relations · Planner

    This year

    01 Goal

Re-establish contact with at least five people I have drifted from.

    02 Tasks

List the people I have lost touch with.

Choose one person to contact each month.

Reach out and arrange a call or meeting.

Host a gathering before the year ends.

    Review the list each quarter.

    03 Time Blocks

First Sunday of each month · 17:00–18:00Reach out to one person.
    October 18 · 18:00–21:00Host a gathering at home.
